CE meets Vice Minister of the National Health Commission and Director of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine

MACAU, September 22 - The Chief Executive, Mr Sam Hou Fai, met today with Vice Minister of the National Health Commission and Director of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Mr Liu Jinfeng. They exchanged views on deepening healthcare cooperation and promoting the development of Macao’s traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) sector and “Big Health” industry.

During the meeting at the Government Headquarters in Macao, Mr Sam welcomed Mr Liu and his delegation to Macao for the 8th Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Conference on Inheritance, Innovation and Development of TCM. The Chief Executive expressed his gratitude to the National Health Commission and the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine for their long-standing support for Macao’s healthcare sector.

The Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) Government was working actively to enhance Macao’s overall medical standards and the quality of its healthcare services through the implementation of relevant initiatives under the Third Five-Year Plan for the Economic and Social Development of the MSAR (2026–2030), and by strengthening collaboration with medical institutions on the Chinese mainland, said Mr Sam.

The Chief Executive said the MSAR Government was steadfastly implementing the instructions contained in President Xi Jinping’s important speeches, advancing appropriate economic diversification and actively optimising Macao’s industrial structure – particularly by leveraging TCM as a key driver for the development of the health industry.

Macao is home to the State Key Laboratory of Mechanism and Quality of Chinese Medicine. The Macao Sub-Centre for Traditional Chinese Medicine of the Regional University-Industry Technology Transfer Centre (Greater Bay Area) was established late last year. The Traditional Chinese Medicine and Big Health Overseas Service Centre was also established during that period. These developments had significantly strengthened Macao’s research capabilities. Combined with the MSAR’s policy advantages, they were effectively promoting integration of industry, academia and research in the sector, while accelerating innovation. TCM enterprises from the Chinese mainland could leverage Macao’s international platform to bring high-quality products to global markets.

During today’s meeting, Mr Liu said that, under the leadership of Mr Sam, Macao had made further progress in the development of TCM. The National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine has always attached great importance to Macao’s role in this field and would continue to implement thoroughly General Secretary Xi’s important guidance on building a “Healthy China” and advancing TCM. The National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine would support Macao in aligning its development with the country’s 15th Five-Year Plan in relation to the revitalisation of TCM. It would use the Traditional Chinese Medicine Science and Technology Industrial Park of Co-operation between Guangdong and Macao as a key platform, and support Macao in enhancing the quality and efficiency of its TCM and “Big Health” industry. The two sides would work together to advance the development of the Greater Bay Area as a national hub for TCM, while contributing to Macao’s economic diversification and the long-term success of the “One country, two systems” principle, added Mr Liu.

Also present at the meeting were: the Chief-of-Office of the Chief Executive’s Office, Ms Chan Kak; the Director of the Health Bureau, Mr Lo Iek Long; and the Director of the Pharmaceutical Administration Bureau, Mr Choi Peng Cheong. Also attending were officials from the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, including: Deputy Director of the General Office, Mr Xing Chao; the Deputy Director of the Department of Personnel and Education, Mr Zhou Jingyu; and the Deputy Director-General of the Department of International Cooperation (Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs Office), Ms Wei Chunyu.
